This was the basic inspiration for the work.

This is just my compressed coal sketch that I drew on a 16x20 canvas.

This was the initial background wash that I did on Dethroned.  I eventually decided that I wanted the background a little darker so I ended up applying several different washes to the background.

Here is the painting just prior to completion.  At this point I have made the background a bit darker and have added a bit more definition to the squares.  I have also added the designated colors for the pieces.  The female figure on the left is the black queen and the male figure on the right represents the white kind.  In the center is a neutral colored bishop.

Here I am with the painting.  I just got a haircut today!

I felt that the work would look a little better if I darkened it up a bit, so I did.
